1933 – Born on the 20th
of August in Lower Turner Marsh, near Launceston, Tasmania.
1941 – Age 8 his sister gave
handed him down a four string tenor guitar.
1942 – Age 9 got a full sized
instrument. He had to learn how to tune it and to play.
1943 – Age 10 was performing at
dances.
1947 – Age 14- Had been
performing at many venues around the district, including the
National Theatre in Launceston, where he performed mainly
Tex Morton, Buddy Williams and Hank Snow material.
He had started writing his own
material, but it wasn’t until he saw a play about Ned Kelly
that he wrote his famous song “The Little Kangaroo”.
This was followed by “One Small
Photograph” and “Wayward Rambler”.
Kevin married and moved to
Melbourne and then to Shepparton where he worked at various
jobs around the district. He performed at local dances and
on 3SR Shepparton “Harmony Trail” with a group called “The
Goldtoppers”.
A recording executive heard that
Claude King was to release “Wolverton Mountain” so he
arranged for Kevin to record the song and had this version
to the radio stations and shops before Claude’s version was
released.
After this success he toured with
Rick and Thel Carey. After a short tour with Frankie Foster
Kevin stopped touring. He decided that he did not want to be
a support act as it did not pay enough and did not want to
take a show out under his own name.
1983 – Inducted into the Hands of
Fame.
2000 – Died on the 9th
of November.
